Artisan Spotlight: Morning Calm

Posted by FlyAway BlueJay on

This week we are introducing the all-natural beauty brand, Morning Calm. These soaps, oils, lip balms and toners are great for sensitive skin or for anyone who loves the simplicity of natural beauty. We spoke with Hwasoon Kim, founder and owner, and she gave us an inside look at the inspiration behind her brand.

Tell us a little about where you grew up. What made it special?
Hwasoon: I grew up in the countryside of Korea, a place called Uljin, where mountains meet the ocean. I was blessed to have beautiful memories in the forests and at the seashore for around 20 years.

When did you first start creating handmade goods?
Hwasoon: After taking a long backpacking trip around the world and quitting my teaching job in Korea, I started making soaps, simply out of curiosity to see if I could create something that I use in everyday life.

What drew you to beauty products? What do you enjoy most about it?
Hwasoon: That is a very interesting question to me too, because I am not a person who cares that much about beauty products. I love beautiful things, but with skin care I value natural, healthy, environmentally friendly notions more than beauty itself. My belief is that what we need in our life is a few simple, quality things.
I love that I create something helpful for people, especially those who have sensitive skin like me and appreciate my perspective.

What is your creative process when you’re trying to create a new product?
Hwasoon: Need, the essential need. The need from within and from my family. This is the very first motive and energy from where the process flows.

How did you come up with your company's name?
Hwasoon: Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) called my homeland, Korea, a land of Morning Calm. My shop name started from that. I love the meaning and all the possible visual images that the name creates. Also, my most important time of the day is early morning, when I can practice meditation in silence. I believe that this calming energy guides my day and work.

Any other interesting facts or stories you’d like to share?
Hwasoon: I recently became a certified yoga teacher. Since I was 20, I've been wandering around the world of yoga and meditation. Even though I'm not going to open a yoga class any time soon, I can feel that this little change is already making ripples in my life. And the vibe will flow in my little shop, too.

We appreciate Hwasoon taking the time to answer our questions and are happy to bring her products to you!
